This ‘Caribbean room” was designed to give high risk women on labour ward a relaxing and comfortable environment in which to give birth. The walls are painted in beautiful reflective blue colours and the painted scenery is that of a carribbean island. There are little ceiling lights which look like stars as well as up- lighting along one of the walls.
We want to encourage all mainstream labour wards to have this kind of themed room.
Bean bags, birth stools, mats, rocking chairs and a birthing pool are available to encourage mobility in labour including the use of telemetry (continuous baby heart rate monitoring underwater) for those who require it.
The majority of women give birth on mainstream labour wards in the UK and it is time now to offer increased choices for birth to higher risk women.
